The statistical structures of neuronal spike trains.
Neuronal
spike trains provide the means for rapid, long distance (over 1mm)
communication within the brain. Thus, since the first recordings by
Adrian, a goal has been to learn how information is encoded within
these trains. A critical insight is that temporal structure is
inexplicably linked to numbers of spikes. I will describe how our
understanding of the structure of these spike trains grew over the past
30 years, what I think we know now, and what critical problems now need
resolution.
